The new fuel efficiency regulations are a step forward for America. Unfortunately, the federal government cannot complete this job for America, the next steps lie in the hands of automakers and car buyers. In the past, automakers have passed CAFE standards by producing an excess number of cars with high gas mileage to compensate for the gas guzzling vehicles Americans have been demanding over the past decade.

I believe that this regulation will not prove to be effective unless a strong education effort is made over the next 14 years to inform car buyers not only on the benefit to their wallet, but also the benefit to the economy, environment, and political stability that purchasing more fuel efficient vehicles can have. Americans need to understand that the fuel efficiency of a vehicle should now be the most important factor when purchasing a car.
